HISTORY of the GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON CHAPTER of the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution

________________________________________

THE GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON CHAPTER (GGW Chapter) was established in July 2000 with its first meeting being held July 20, 2000 in Chico, CA.     The Chapter’s official Charter document from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NASSAR) was received and presented to Compatriot Stanley Henderson, founder of the GGW Chapter and its first President, at the CASSAR (California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution) Board of Manager’s Meeting held November 2-4, 2000 in Newark,CA.

In August 2000, President Stanley Henderson, in the first “President’s Message” published in the Chapter’s newsletter, The General’s Orders, wrote in part . . .

“We have, by choosing the chapter name of General George Washington, accepted a great challenge.  Other chapters in the CASSAR will expect us to be a forerunner and example to others of the high standards of accomplishment strived for and achieved by General Washington.  Clubs, groups, service organizations, and the public in general, will expect the activities of our members, both in public service and in our private lives, to reflect the high standards that our chapter name implies.  I feel certain we will rise to meet these expectations; we have set high standards and goals, and we will meet them.  I have no doubt we shall continue in our pursuit to achieve these goals and succeed!”

The chapter started with nineteen charter members and has expanded to sixty-seven members as of December 2013.  It has formed a Color Guard Unit, organized a School Flag Program, and purchased several Revolutionary War flags which are currently displayed in parades, the School Flag Program, other service organizations, and senior groups throughout Northern California.

In its short history, GGW Chapter has hosted two state meetings of the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (CASSAR); once in April 2002 and again in April 2004.
